Purcell School student's Chineke! fundraiser

Chineke! Foundation is grateful to Zara Williams, a student at the Purcell School, who last month organised a special fundraising concert and campaign in support of Chineke!

The ROOTS concert featured fellow students at the Purcell School contributing performances of works by Black, Asian and ethnically diverse composers in celebration of Black History Month.

We were delighted to hear about the fundraising initiative led by Zara, a Year 13 pianist. During the lockdown period over the summer, she spent time researching composers of Black, Asian and ethnically diverse heritage, and was motivated to explore their work even further. Zara said:

“I strongly feel that following a night of inspiring and eye-opening music making, both audience and participants have been motivated to discover more works by Black, Asian & ethnically diverse artists, both past and present. I believe it is crucial that these composers' works find their way out of the shadows and into the concert hall. The Chineke! Foundation champions and celebrates diversity in classical music, they represent everything that “Roots” stands for. That is why it is so important to me, that this concert helps support and raise money for such a significant and impactful cause; so that young Black, Asian and ethnically diverse musicians, in the UK and abroad may continue to have their voices, ideas and creativity heard and nurtured.”
